HEAD SWIM TEAM COACH
PAY: $8-10K + $3K for Master’s Program (optional)

The Head Coach of the Normandy Park swim team is a part-time annual salaried position that reports to the elected Board of Trustees of Normandy Park Swim Club. The Head Coach is responsible for directing, overseeing, and managing NPSC’s summer swim team program (approximately 195 swimmers ages 5-18) that emphasizes fun, competition, and training and competes with other GSSSL swim clubs.

The ideal candidate for this position possesses a coaching philosophy that aligns with Normandy Park Swim Club’s mission and values, is a team player capable of developing and maintaining positive relationships with co-workers and participants, is innovative in approach and maintains knowledge of the latest research and developments in swimming and swim coaching, strives for continuous professional development of self and staff, and has high personal and professional ethical standards.

The Head Coach manages a staff of coaches (3-6 total staff) and works in collaboration with the Club General Manager, the Board’s Swim Coordinators, other Club employees, and elected Board members. The Head Coach is responsible for oversight or execution of their own duties, delegating to direct reporting staff as appropriate and providing regular updates to the Swim Team Coordinators.

This position requires a willingness to work flexible hours, particularly during the high season (mid-May through early August), which requires more hours than the low season (September-April).

General Responsibilities:

  • Create and promote the swim team program vision, including training philosophy and programs, practice plans, and stroke technique principles and instruction
  • Oversee and coach daily morning practices, training programs, and keep track of all swimmer’s achievements throughout
  • Collaborate with Club General Manager and Swim Team Coordinators on matters of scheduling, event planning, equipment and facility needs as appropriate
  • Own and manage regular and timely communication with swim team parents and guardians (face-to-face, email, etc.); communicate meet-related deadlines and sign-ups directly to families
  • Manage and train all coaching staff; ensure licensure and certifications of the coaching staff, and maintain certificates on-site Manage and train all coaching staff; ensure licensure and certifications of the coaching staff, and maintain certificates on-site
  • Coordinate, track, and submit required certifications for all coaches and staff to the GSSSL and Normandy Park Swim Club Manager
  • Create meet files and oversee individual and team entries using Team Unify and Team Manager, and Meet Manager
  • Collaborate with the NPSC Swim Team Coordinators for hosted swim meets, including planning, organization, preparation, and execution; conduct away meet planning in partnership with team staff
  • Attend all regular and post season swim meets; act as team lead in supervising athletes at meets
  • Attend all morning practices; act as team lead in supervising athletes and assistant coaches at morning practices
  • Partner with Swim Team Coordinators to plan swim team social events
  • Provide written updates regarding the swim team to the Board
  • Work with coaching staff to ensure program is cohesive and successful among all groups
  • Provide educational information to parents and families
  • Organize and conduct annual swim team orientation event and end-of-season awards banquet including awards

Optional Additional Responsibilities:

  • Master’s Swim Program Director
    • Attend Practices for Master’s Swim
    • Design Programs and workouts for members
    • Starting at $3200 DOE

Required Qualifications and Training:

  • A passion for swimming and coaching with a minimum of five years of experience coaching competitive swimmers in a leadership role
  • Experience directing swim team activities at swimming pools (1-2 seasons), including supervising personnel
  • Two years of college-level coursework or any equivalent combination of training, education, and experience, including or supplemented by courses in swimming and lifesaving
  • Excellent leadership, communication and organizational skills.
  • Strong knowledge of swimming techniques, stroke instruction, and training methodologies.

Must have and maintain current certifications in the following:

  • Lifeguard certification
  • First Aid/CPR certification
  • Safesport certification (US Center for Safesport)
  • All certifications required by GSSSL for coaching staff
  • Experience as a lifeguard and swimming instructor (1-3 seasons)
    Ability to multi-task, prioritize, and handle multiple duties at once
  • Demonstrated strong organizational, communication, interpersonal, and customer service skills
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills with the ability to communicate in a positive and direct manner
  • Experience with Google office applications, Microsoft Office Suite

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience with Summer Swim Operations, and meet software (Team Manager, Meet Manager, and Team Unify)
  • Background in child development, physical education or youth athletics.
